Brandon Kyle Goodman 's newly published You Gotta Be You: How to Embrace This Messy Life and Step Into Who You Really Are is much more than an advice book. To be a queer Black voice in the animation space is really incredible, and I wish I had a character like Walter to watch growing up. That means so much. Watch! Its not about being politically correct. I met with a couple publishing houses and I ended up with Legacy and my editor was like, Listen, there are going to be a lot of books about anti-racism coming out in the next couple years because of whats happening, but theres nothing about Black queerness. Brandon Kyle Goodman joins us now. I also get to knowledge that the experience I am having, because of how I look, because of how I present, is that of a Black man. Its not enough for me to get mine. Well, I'm just going to dive right in to the guts of this book because CHANG: You start from a really upfront place. She said, oh, well, if I ever see you in a movie, I'm going to point and say, he can't drive. And we really try to push that, which is why it's exciting that [the trans character] Natalie comes back on Human Resources. I'm also committed to getting Black artists access to the resources they need to thrive in the industry, so I've started a charitable arm of Black Folx which will offer mentorship, provide small scholarships, and put on events with the intention of empowering and amplifying Black voices. But the community in which all those things come from, which I would say is Black and brown queer folks, aren't protected and aren't valued and aren't validated inside of that. And as time went on, I think I, you know, further specified that it's love - you know, people to love themselves and see themselves and know that they are three dimensional, full people and that they're worthy of love even with all their flaws, even with all their mistakes. As a Black nonbinary, queer person in a dark-skinned 6'1", 180-pound male body born into a religious immigrant household, Brandon knows the pain of having to hide one's true self, the work of learning to love that true self, and the freedom of finally being your . Being Black and queer definitely does. I hope that TV and film will recognize and honor the fact that Black people, queer people, POC, and women are beyond capable of telling our own stories and that audiences are hungry for it. It also targets our young people, giving them adult sentences. When Goodman came in for his first day as a writer on season 5 of Big Mouth, he says, There was already talk about introducing these two new characters, the Lovebugs, and the concept that we would meet them in season 5 and they would take us into this spinoff. But even as they started fleshing out these new creatures, Goodman had no idea he would get the chance to actually play one of them.
